The Importance Of Running
WELLNESS WARRIOR: MARGARET SPRING FROM @RUNER4CAKE
I have been running since before seventh grade. In the early years of life it was a way for me to get out of the house and be somewhat athletic (I was a really uncoordinated child and failed miserable at sports like basketball and soccer).
As time passed, I realized that freedom of movement is not something to take for granted. I work in a hospital where I see all sorts of injuries, neurologic conditions and genetic conditions which prevent people from moving freely.
Usually before heading out the door for a run, I think about these individuals and how lucky I am to be able to run and explore all sorts of terrain on foot. It is usually a good motivator and I forget about how tired I am or whatever excuse I try and give myself to not run.
Running has also helped me through an incredible season of grief. I hit a season in life where I was being challenged in some of the most painful ways possible. I would head out the door on runs. I would cry, clear my mind, and come back to face what was next. I would always return from my runs with a sense of peace and accomplishment.
Running has also brought me an amazing community of strong and supportive women. I am so incredibly thankful for this. It doesn’t matter how fast you are. It’s a time to get outside, connect to people and enjoy nature.
